Philadelpha Flyers Alumni at St. John's Parish

The Philadelphia Flyers Alumni joined St. John's Hospice staff to serve up a pre Christmas meal on December 22nd. Alumni Ray Allison, Bill Barber, Bobby Clarke, Bob Dailey, Paul Holmgren, Bob Kelly, Orest Kindrachuk and Don Saleski served a warm meal to 350 men who came to the hospice on Wednesday. St. John’s is one of the best known and most popular soup kitchens in the Philadelphia area and the Flyers Alumni have made it a tradition to help serve meals each year during the holidays.

St. John's Hospice provides a nutritious and hot noon meal for more than 300 men each weekday; as well as counseling services, daily showers and clothing, and a mailroom for over 3,000. If you too would like to help, please visit the St. John's Hospice website at www.saintjohnshospice.org

Jim Watson Inducted Into the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame

Jim Watson was recently honored by the Delco Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony at the Concordville Inn.

Jim was born in the tiny western Canadian hamlet of Smithers, British Columbia.  Jim was named Best Defenseman in the WCHL during the 1971-72 season.  The Flyers selected Jim in the  1972  Draft, and the prospect of playing on the same team with his brother Joe, "put the icing on the cake." That was the beginning of Jimmy’s ten years in the NHL—all with the Orange and Black. After playing pivotal roles in the Flyers two Stanley Cups, in 1974 and 75, injuries started to pile up for him in his mid-twenties.  He suffered permanent retinal damage from a high stick in a game with the St. Louis Blues. Jim retired after the 1981-82 season.

Also inducted at the ceremony were:
Russell Carlson (Humanitarian Award)
Connie Newman (Baseball)
Ted Woolery (Track & Field Coach)
Jules Falcone (Bowling)
Mary Ellen Olcese (Swmming)
Dave Johnson (Distinguised)
John Leary (Football Coach)

The Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame, dates back to 1939 (Delaware County Old Timers Association), and was the first organization to recognize the many outstanding men and women of all sports in Delaware County.

Brad McCrimmon
1959 - 2011

Brad McCrimmonThe Philadelphia Flyers Alumni are saddened at the loss of Brad McCrimmon.  Brad was a boy-hood friend of many former NHL players, a close friend and team mate of others. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Maureen, daughter Carlin, and son Liam at this most difficult time.

Brad played for the Philadelphia Flyers during the 1982-83 thru 1986-87 seasons. As a Flyer, he played in 367 regular season games recording 35 goals, 152 assists and 355 penalty minutes. In post-season play, he skated in 46 playoff games for 7 goals, 6 assists and 55 penalty minutes.

This would have been Brad’s first season as a head coach in the KHL, the past three seasons spent as an assistant coach for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.  The former defenseman died at age 52 when the chartered plane carrying Brad with his coaches and players, team officials and other guests crashed shortly after take-off on September 7th, 2011 in Russia.  The plane was headed for Belarus where the team was to play their first game of the season, Brad’s first game as Head Coach.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends and fans of the KHL’s Lokomotiv Yarioslavl team after this tragic loss of life and horrific sports disaster.  May the pride in their team and the love for its players long be remembered.  We share their grief.
